During October, the award-winning repair shops offer their customers free front and rear brake pads or shoes a retail value of up to $79.95 when brake service is performed. Customers pay for only the labor, shop supplies and other parts needed for the repair. In return, Hillmuth donates 10 percent of each brake service to The Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund. Dr. Vincent Tuohy and his team at The Cleveland Clinic have developed a preventative vaccine that has been successful in lab trials and are raising funds to start human trials. Hillmuth has set a goal of raising $30,000 toward this effort.

To show their support for Brakes for Breasts, the service technicians, office personnel and owners at Hillmuth's four locations are wearing special pink and black shirts, pumping disc brakes instead of weights and even doing pirouettes in a tutu. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwfjqvCsHYw&sns=em.

"We want to help create a world where our wives, daughters and graddaughters will never have to worry about facing breast cancer," says Doug Hillmuth, owner. "We're proud to be part of a team of 30+ shops from throughout the nation to offer free brake pads or shoes to raise money for a vaccine to end breast cancer."

The vaccine developed by Cleveland Clinic researchers targets a protein found only in breast tumors and not in healthy tissue. Nicknamed the Pink Vaccine, it has been successful when tested on laboratory mice. Researchers are in the process of raising $6 million to bring the vaccine to testing on human subjects.

Hillmuth Certified Automotive, founded in 1978, services more than 1,200 cars each month from its four repair shops in Howard and Montgomery counties: Columbia, Clarksville, Glenwood and Gaithersburg. The Automotive Training Institute named the Clarksville shop as the 2011 Top Repair Shop in the nation and ranked the Columbia facility among the Top Twelve Repair Shops. Owners Doug and Billy Hillmuth also have been cited for their many humanitarian and charitable efforts.
