High -Tech Shift In Public Entry To Waste Management Sites

(pss), a Shirley-based company, announced the completed installation of an automated gate and data collection system at the entrance to the Westminster town transfer station for waste management. This software interface is the first of its kind and has been fully operational for over three months. The new system was installed over a three day period and utilizes a revised car windshield label that is embedded with a radio frequency (RFD) chip. The concept is similar to the EZ Pass automated access system. The automated reader scans the chip as the vehicle approaches and triggers the gate to open. This new installation provides a reporting model that offers improved usage analytics and support of multiple gates for both entrance and exit.

For Josh Hall, the Director of Public Works for the town of Westminster, the purpose of this high-tech shift was to control costs. Understanding who was accessing the transfer station was another benefit. With new limits on trash volume and high dumping fees in surrounding towns they previously had no data on who or how many people were accessing the station. This system not only limits access to just town residents, but also collects quantifiable data on usage, all while eliminating the need for an attendant during peak usage days when an average of 1,500 vehicles could be expected .

"The system is doing a great job of achieving what we set out to do," according to Josh. "We can look at the data daily, weekly or monthly and we know exactly what's going on." "It also makes people think about how much and what they are bringing in which will, in turn, encourage more recycling."

Josh has been the Director of Public Works in Westminster, MA for approximately two years.
