Today, Atlanta-based non-profit organization Healthy Notions was awarded a $2,000 grant from Target for the Project Need to READ children's literacy enrichment program.
- (1888PressRelease) July 17, 2010 - Roswell, GA - Healthy Notions Incorporated: Project Need to READ, is the recipient of a $2,000 Early Childhood Reading grant awarded by Target. The grant will allow Project Need to READ, a children's literacy enrichment project, to continue the mission of developing healthy communities by decreasing risk factors for children (ages 6 to 12) through educational, health and inspirational projects and initiatives.
Through Project Need to READ, children hear engaging books read aloud--or read them independently--and make connections to their own lives. They express their feelings and grapple with big ideas through 1)discussion, 2)drama, 3)art/music, 4)movement, and 5)writing. Projects and activities encourage family reading and interaction thereby increasing children's motivation to read and ignite a love and infectious excitement for literacy.
"We are delighted to receive this grant from Target because it enables our organization to bring families together and instill a life-long love of reading in children," said Barenda Whitaker, President of Healthy Notions Incorporated.
This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism. Today that equals more than $3 million every week.
"At Target, our local grants are making a difference in the communities we serve," said Laysha Ward, president, community relations, Target. "We're proud to partner with Healthy Notions as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work."
