Healthy kids shun sick friends - one author's 'sunflower' children's books help these kids connect
83% of school-aged children (5-11) in the US are considered in good health according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cynthia W. Post, author of the popular new Carrie Flower children's book series, is not only concerned about the 17% who are not well, but how their healthy friends relate to them.
- (1888PressRelease) May 09, 2011 - West Conshohocken, PA - A cancer survivor, Cynthia W. Post, 54, knows firsthand that many people do not know how to relate to a friend's illness, so they often simply stay away. She asked herself, if adults fear facing friends in difficult circumstances, what must it be like for children? "I created Carrie Flower to teach children and their parents about empathy and the importance of supporting rather than shying away, from those in need," says Post.
Infinity Publishing recently announced the addition of Post's first three Carrie Flower books to their titles list, with the fourth in the series, "Carrie Flower's Book for Brighter Days" being prepared for impending publication. Post's books are available on Infinity's bookstore site, BuyBooksOnTheWeb.com.
The Carrie Flower series follows the daily activities of a sunflower girl, in Meet Carrie Flower, and addresses people's differences in Carrie Flower Goes to Camp. Post says, "It's here she learns that (like people) flowers look, behave, and even smell, differently." In the third book, Carrie Flower Goes to the Hospital, Post introduces children to "Kate," a sunflower with a broken petal (unidentified life-threatening illness), and through her, Carrie learns the value of friendship.
Carrie Flower's brightly colored website (CarrieFlower.com) encourages parents to help their children become Pen Pals; Carrie's catchy theme song, featured in live productions, plays with a click of the mp3 button. The website is modeled after the books' illustrations, provided by Post's daughter, Kirby M. Brislin, 28. In addition to Carrie (the sunflower), Brislin characterized Carrie's friends, Mary Wildflower, Nancy Daisy and Ruthie Rose.
Since the series' debut in 2010, for every book sold, Post donates a book and a handcrafted Carrie Flower doll to a hospitalized child. This was a welcome act of kindness during the October 2010 special event at Philadelphia's Please Touch Museum. The next opportunity to meet Carrie Flowers' author, Cynthia W. Post, is at the May 19-21, 2011 Fine Arts Fiesta in Wilkes-Barre, PA (fineartsfiesta.org).
