Harris Corporation Employees to Propel Students' Knowledge into Orbit during National Aerospace Week
Employees from Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, will teach local eighth grade students at Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy about satellite orbits and altitude control as part of the company's participation in National Aerospace Week.
- (1888PressRelease) September 15, 2011 - Harris is partnered with the National Space Foundation and the Academy to provide the workshop, which will feature hands-on activities and lectures for the students spanning two days-September 14 and 15, 2011.
Harris employees Bob Gess and Heather Michaelson, both orbital analysts on the U.S. Air Force Network and Space Operations and Maintenance (NSOM) program, will conduct the demonstrations. The first day's presentations will focus on the fundamentals of physics and Newton's laws of motion to help students understand how satellites stay in orbit, while the second day will feature a lecture and hands-on demonstration in the Discovery Institute's Space Education Lab to teach about an orbit's size, shape, and orientation.
"We are very fortunate to have Harris employees provide relevant and applicable instruction in our eighth grade science classes again this year so students can learn the importance and value of satellites and how beneficial they are in our everyday life," said Larry Bartel, principal, Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy.
"As a company with more than 50 years of experience in the aerospace industry, we hope these demonstrations by local Harris employees during National Aerospace Week spark students' curiosity and quest for knowledge, and set the trajectory for future aerospace careers," said John Heller, president, Harris IT Services.
National Aerospace Week, which runs from September 11 through 17, 2011, recognizes the aerospace industry's contributions to the nation's history, economy, security and workforce.
