"This event is the perfect platform for showcasing our exquisite pieces in an intimate and fun environment!" States CEO of Harkiss Designs, Harriet Zaffoni. "Shecky's hosts over 80 events nationwide every year with a mission of connecting women from all over together. With our unique background, I'm elated to be participating in such an event and be able to introduce our accessories to a broader market of fascinating young women. Harkiss Designs has a clear goal to make the world a better place, and Shecky's strong female community understands and supports this. I am expecting an overwhelming response from to wonderful attendees."
Harkiss Designs came to be after Harriet Zaffoni returned to her homeland of Uganda, and witnessed the social inequalities that plagued the region of Eastern Africa. As a New Yorker of Ugandan descent she felt as if it was her duty to play a role in tackling such issues as poverty and gender inequality. Zaffoni took notice of how skilled her fellow East Africans were, in particular the women, and how highly advanced they were in creating beautifully complex items from natural materials such as banana fiber, wood, stone and leather. She made it her mission to give these women a voice and empower them with an opportunity to sustain and support themselves as well as their families. Not only did Zaffoni provide these women with an outlet to present their talents to the world and a chance at a new life, but she also put forth the effort to change the community by donating a percentage of all sales from Harkiss Designs to the charity organization "Lend A hand Uganda-USA"; which provides vulnerable and orphaned children in Uganda with foster care services, education, healthcare and more.
