"North Carolina State University Earns LEED Silver "Thousands of gallons of water captured for reuse-for washing vehicles, for example.
Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) January 09, 2012 - Solar panels for water heating and indoor climate control, and a rainwater collection system that supports the maintenance of buildings and grounds were among the water reduction and energy efficiency features that helped earn LEED Silver certification for a distinctive Hardin Construction Company project at North Carolina State University.
Hardin's renovation and addition to the university's Facilities Operations Support Space was awarded LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
LEED-or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. USGBC LEED certification levels are Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
Unique, water reuse capabilities
Begun in February 2010 and recently completed, the project included comprehensive renovation of and an addition to two existing structures to create campus facilities group offices, break room, conference and meeting spaces, as well as service garage areas, including repair and equipment wash bays.
Unusual for a facilities operations center, the complex's water reuse capabilities provide for captured water to be used daily for multiple purposes, including for toilets and washing vehicles.
The project's architect of record was Davis Kane Architects, PA of Raleigh.
