New education building sheds light on energy savings and efficiency.
Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) January 16, 2012 - Designed originally to meet the requirements for LEED Silver certification, the new School of Education building on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro pursued enough additional credits for sustainability features to earn LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Hardin Construction Company's Raleigh office partnered with Rodgers Builders and Walter B. Davis, both of Charlotte, NC, to build the 110,500-square-foot classroom and office building-the first "green" building on the UNCG campus.
The $47 million project integrated sustainability construction methods and building features that included nearly 30 percent use of regional materials, recycling of 88 percent of construction waste; use of drought resistant plants and low-flow plumbing fixtures; large windows that allow natural light, thus conserving energy; flooring materials certified by Greenguard Environmental Institute as meeting stringent chemical emissions requirements; and a bio-retention pond and sand filter systems to promote storm water quality management.
LEED-or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. USGBC LEED certification levels are Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
The project accomplished additional credits for its handling of waste, for recycled content and for use of regional materials.
The new five-story building is the primary home of UNCG's School of Education and includes classrooms, lecture halls, multimedia and technology laboratories, and conference spaces designed to promote interaction between students and faculty.
The project's architect of record is O'Brien/Atkins Associates of Durham, NC.
