Hands-on app lets users learn sign language alphabet
Learning sign language just got a lot easier with the launch of a new app which teaches the basics of British Sign Language (BSL).
- (1888PressRelease) December 01, 2011 - The BSL Sign & Spell app is a step-by-step guide through the finger-spelling alphabet, which is the first move towards successfully communicating with a BSL user. Leading interpreting agency Sign Solutions worked with developers e-Learning Studios to create the innovative new app. Launched this week in the Android Market and Apple's Appstore, it is already receiving top reviews for its innovative use of video to demonstrate each sign.
BSL is part of Deaf Culture and the first language of an estimated 70,000 people in the UK. Finger-spelling is the first step taught to new learners of BSL, and is used to spell unfamiliar words, as well as proper nouns such as place or people's names.
BSL Sign & Spell takes the user through each letter of the alphabet, with the help of two videos showing the front and side view of each sign. This makes learning easy, and a quick quiz after every few letters means the learner can check their progress. The app is a handy tool which lets learners of BSL revise their alphabet anywhere, at the touch of a button.
Sean Nicholson, co-founder and CEO of Sign Solutions, explains how the idea for BSL Sign & Spell came about: "I remember getting a finger-spelling card at Scouts and being fascinated by this new language. This app does exactly the same thing, but with the added convenience of having the finger-spelling played out on videos on our Smartphones, in our pockets!"
Nitin Thakrar, from e-Learning Studios, said, "this was a great app to develop and we really enjoyed working with the BSL interpreters. We're very proud to be part of this and look forward to developing further apps on BSL sign language in the future".
