  • (1888PressRelease) September 03, 2012 - Dr. Michael Yessis, famous biomechanic guru with over 16 books on the subject and over 60 years of practice in the field of training elite athletes, announces a new product for hamstring rehabilitation.

According to Dr. Yessis, "before we look at hamstring rehabilitation, we need to look at what causes hamstring injuries. It is rare to find a sports team, at any level, with no hamstring problems! Many teams, including professional clubs, continually lose great players for months because of hamstring injuries. It has gotten to the point where most teams now believe that hamstring injuries, and hamstring rehabilitation, are "part of the game." But does it have to be this way? The answer is no" states Dr. Yessis. "When you examine how the hamstrings are involved and how they can best be strengthened in a manner that is specific to the execution of various sports skills" concludes Dr. Yessis.

Biomechanic research shows that the problem is in a lack of understanding of how the hamstrings act during the execution of different skills for different sports. There are now published reports stating that it is the eccentric contraction, or more accurately the forced eccentric contraction, that is the culprit in hamstring injuries.

For example, in running or when taking a quick first step, when the knee is driven forward, the hamstring undergoes a forced eccentric stretch at the hip joint. When the shin whips out, there is an even greater eccentric contraction of the hamstrings and tendons at the knee joint. These eccentric contractions are needed to prepare (tense) the hamstrings for the pawback movement, the main force-producing action to drive the leg down and back to make contact with the ground and propel the body forward. That is how the hamstring works biomechanically.

The key to hamstring rehabilitation, according to Dr. Yessis, is the proper training, or in other words, preventative measures. And proper training can only be accomplished by doing exercises for the hamstring that duplicate exactly how the hamstring is used in the specific sport that the athlete plays. This has been coined specialized training by Dr. Yessis and he is credited with the creation and implementation of this science based methodology to help prevent injuries to athletes, including hamstring injuries.

Dr. Yessis announces at this time a DVD with a specific set of exercises for Hamstring injury prevention and hamstring rehabilitation.
