Haiti: A Forgotten Occupation
100 years later, independent filmmaker gives voice to the Haitians
That fought through a forgotten US Occupation.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) July 04, 2015 - Haitian-American, Alain Martin, has written and directed a documentary that seeks to shed a light on a chapter of Haitian history to this generation of Haitian-Americans and Americans alike. He has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money towards finalizing the film that has taken him 4 years to make a reality.
After the devastating earthquake in 2010 that left hundreds of thousands dead and millions more homeless, Haiti has been the topic of interest to many. Various media outlets and casual observers alike began a chain of speculation in an attempt to clarify Haiti's ailments. With the label of "poorest country in the Western Hemisphere" as its most identified qualifier, Haiti was simply deemed a cursed nation with a long history of government corruption, political instability, and crushing poverty. Moved by the images of maimed and newly orphaned children, NGO's sprang up throughout the country, staffed with young, well-intentioned foreigners who were convinced Haiti could be built back better. However, helping the nation seems to be an increasingly impossible task. Haiti's issues, including the current mass-deportation of Haitians from their neighboring country The Dominican Republic, are rooted in very complex dealings, many of which can be traced back to the U.S Occupation of a 100 years ago when the United States Marines thought they could turn Haiti into a model nation. The story of that occupation is what Alain weaves together in his feature documentary, The Forgotten Occupation. "You can't be interested about helping Haiti and not know about the occupation" says Mr. Martin.
The Forgotten Occupation tells the story of the brutal 19 years during which the people of Haiti found themselves segregated in their own nation and reduced to second class citizens in their own nation; they were subjected to forced labor; their lands were seized and given to American corporations and their national bank was turned over to National Citibank of New York, known as Citibank today. When the Haitians tried to resist, they were gunned down, beaten, and imprisoned. By the time the Occupation ended, Haiti's political course had been forever altered.
Through Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website that allows users to fund diverse projects with the help of their friends, family, or anybody interested, Mr. Martin and his team aim to raise $20,000. The money will go towards post-production costs, marketing, and film festival entries. The campaign launched on June 1st and concludes on July 31st. At its midway point, the project has been 70% funded.
