Guy Asaro Rides To Recognize Courage, Perseverance And Dreams
When Guy Asaro rides, he does it with purpose. He could have been followed on Facebook or Twitter but he had no time. While cycling has long been a passion for Guy Asaro personally, he recently rode not only for himself, but also for the CAF.
- San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) December 30, 2010 - Guy Asaro has affiliated with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to do what few business executives have done; ride a long way on two wheels. Established in 1997, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is a unique organization that recognizes the athletic greatness inherent in all people with physical challenges and supports their athletic endeavors by providing grants for training, competition and equipment needs. His friends could have done searches on search engines such as Google or Yahoo about the organization as he mentioned it to them. Recently, Guy Asaro accepted a unique challenge along with 99 other amateur athletes to ride 620 miles over a seven-day period. For Guy Asaro, the ride was fulfilling at several levels.
Guy Asaro participated in the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge Ride on October 15, 2010. Guy Asaro, ninety-nine strong riders and twenty challenged athletes made their way from San Francisco to San Diego. The seven day journey took the riders down California's coast line riding through some of the county's most scenic landscapes.
According to Guy Asaro, the mission of the Challenged Athletes Foundation is to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. Guy Asaro supports what the Challenged Athletes Foundation believes; that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life.
While he did not actively use social media such as Twitter to track his progress he did blog for family and friends. The first night's event, held at the Golden Gate Bridge was quite emotional, reported Guy Asaro. There was a dynamic introduction presenting the mission of CAF. Additionally, Guy Asaro listened to two very inspirational speeches. The first was by NBA legend Bill Walton. The second was from Robin Williams who is a huge supporter of CAF. Both speeches left Guy Asaro inspired and ready to ride.
The scenic ride took Guy Asaro and the other cyclists through Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Newport Beach and La Jolla. The riders averaged between 75 and 120 miles each day, depending on terrain. For Guy Asaro the physical stress of the ride was overshadowed by the many challenged athletes with whom he was cycling. On the third day, Guy Asaro and the other riders were joined by members of the Garmin Transition cycling team. It was a challenging day on the road with over 8000 feet of climbing; Guy Asaro reported that he was particularly impressed throughout the ride by the hand cyclists who had a tough time negotiating the mountainous coastal roads.
Weather also played a big part in the challenge that Guy Asaro and the other riders faced. Both cold and rain accompanied the riders on some legs of the ride. Multiple flat tires, misplaced shoes and riding in solitude, having missed a morning departure, became more about appreciating what CAF was accomplishing and less about personal hardship. Guy Asaro was a long way from his desk and business at Corky McMillin and that was a good thing for body mind and soul, he stated.
Like all of the other riders participating in the Million Dollar Challenge, Guy Asaro was asked to raise at least $10,000 for the organization. The organization was successful in achieving its million dollar goal, and Guy Asaro along with all of the other riders gained something that money can never buy; fulfillment. The adventure left Guy Asaro reinvigorated and with a sense of renewed optimism.
