  • (1888PressRelease) February 28, 2025 - Geneva – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 028.25, detailing a new guideline from Washington State, USA, for the restriction of lead in cookware.

Codified as Chapter 70A.565 RCW, the new guideline issued by Washington State’s Department of Ecology (DOE) defines cookware as any metal pots, pans, bakeware, rice cookers, pressure cookers and other containers and devices intended for the preparation or storage of food.

In older or imported items, lead can still be found in cookware in glazes or as a stabilizer. Serious health issues, including neurological damage and developmental delays in children, can be caused when it leaches into food.

Washington State became the first US state to restrict lead to no more than 5 ppm in cookware or cookware components with its approval of HB 1551 (Chapter 340, 2024) in March of 2024. These restrictions will become effective on January 1, 2026.

The DOE issued a guideline in November 2024 to help cookware manufacturers and sellers comply with Chapter 70A.565 RCW.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 028.25 includes further compliance information for Chapter 70A.565 RCW.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 028.25 for more details.
