  • (1888PressRelease) June 01, 2011 - Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund will hold its third annual Hall of Fame Induction weekend to be held at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan Friday June 3, 2011. This event will honor 14 players for their outstanding NFL playing careers as well as for their charitable contributions.

    This evening will be a celebration of the fabulous careers on the field and the equally outstanding deeds off the field of Gale Sayers, Desmond Howard, Dexter Bussey, Anthony Carter, Gail Cogdill, Dorne Dibble, George Guerre, Jon Jansen, Dick LeBeau, Herman Moore, Pat Studstill, Tommy Watkins and Sam Williams. We will be honoring current Detroit Lions Quarterback, Shaun Hill, who is the unsung hero of the 2010 Detroit Lions and receiving the first Ron Kramer Award.

    We also will be giving an award to Tim Pendell, retired Director of Community Affairs for the Detroit Lions, in appreciation of his support for the retired players.

    In attendance will also be Mike Ditka, Chairman of the Gridiron Greats "This is a great way for us to honor deserving individuals not just because they were great players but because they have given so much back to the community".

    Kyle Turley, former NFL great and commentator/analyst Roy Firestone will be entertaining us that evening along with former voice of the Detroit Lions, Mark Champion, who will be emceeing the dinner.

    Tickets for the dinner cost $125 per person or $1,100 per table of ten. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.

    Over 60 players will be present at the dinner and over 20 players available for an autograph session, which will take place between 10am and 4pm at the Suburban Collection Showplace on Saturday, June 4, 2011. Please go to www.detroitcitysports.com for players' times and autograph pricing.

    "We are thrilled to once again host this dinner in the Detroit area to honor these men and thank them for all of their efforts. This event has doubled in size over the last two years and the monies raised have helped a lot of retired players who have fallen on hard times" said Shannon Jordan, President of the Gridiron Greats.

    The GGAF, whose chairman is Mike Ditka, is a non-stock, nonprofit corporation that has been very active in retired NFL player assistance. The organization has provided over $2.5 million in financial aid and medical assistance to retired NFL players. The organization focuses on the humanitarian side of post-football related issues which include coordination of social services to retired players who have paved the way for the NFL and are in need due to a variety of reasons including inadequate disability and/or pensions.

    The GGAF also provides hands-on assistance to help retired players and their families deal with hardships they face after football. The services include medical assistance, financial assistance for utilities, medication, food, automotive payments and childcare.
