  • (1888PressRelease) February 23, 2011 - When Dave Peiser and Art Arquilla went looking for unique, quality t-shirts to carry on their Greenliness.com website, they knew they wanted to invest only in fabrics that were ecologically sound and would give their customers good value. They looked extensively at standard cotton, organic cotton, bamboo and hemp fabrics, and after a lot of research and discussion, they concluded that hemp was the best fabric by far and for many reasons.

Hemp's qualities are truly remarkable. Some of the environmental benefits of growing hemp are (1) Fast and robust growth, (2) No herbicides/pesticides required, (3) Suppresses weeds, (4) Improves Soil Structure, (5) Produces lots of oxygen, and (6) Cleans up pollution. Hemp is 100% biodegradable, recyclable and reusable, and the speed at which hemp grows can provide benefits regarding the resource requirements of the end product. Another important aspect of hemp is that clothing and textiles made from hemp have no residual chemicals that could affect your health (as many other fabrics do). Hemp based fabrics block the sun's UV rays more effectively than other fabrics, and they do it naturally. This is true even if it's only a 50% blend with another fabric. Hemp fabric resists UV and UVB 80% more than cotton. The fabric is smooth, soft and durable and the most powerful humidity absorbing and ventilating natural fiber clothing one can wear, and its puncture resistance is 40% greater than that of cotton. Interestingly, Hemp fabric also actually prevents static electricity buildup. Finally, it is naturally anti-microbial and will protect you from bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus. It is Dave and Art's studied opinion that Hemp is a great sustainable and green product that is superior in pretty much every way.

Hemp is first and foremost a sustainable crop. Pesticides are not needed in the farming of Hemp, and it does not deplete the soil like so many other crops, but, in fact, returns nitrogen to the soil and improves soil fertility. As a result, the soil requires less fertilizer for subsequent rotated crops. Due to Hemp's porous nature, it is more absorbent than cotton and can breathe so that it is cool in summer and warm in winter. In stress tests conducted by Patagonia, Inc. (clothing company), hemp had eight times the tensile strength and four times the durability of cotton. Diapers made from hemp fabrics will last longer and stand up to rougher use than cotton. Hemp material lasts.
