Green Is For 'Go' As Carers' Charity Gears Up For Fundraising Through Car Donation
Giveacar was established in January 2010 as a not-for-profit social enterprise. To date, Giveacar has processed more than 3000 cars for salvage or scrap.
- (1888PressRelease) March 29, 2011 - A SCOTTISH charity is serving up a "bangers and cash" initiative as part of a novel fundraising drive to boost its vital cross-country work.
Crossroads Caring Scotland is an award-winning national charity that provides home-based respite for the country's growing number of carers.
Support is provided irrespective of whether the person being cared for is a loved one with terminal cancer, someone close living with dementia or a disabled relative requiring lifelong care.
The Glasgow-based charity was established in 1978 and operates from more than 40 centres throughout Scotland, reaching out to approximately 8,500 carers in the heart of the community..
To accelerate its fundraising work, it has now teamed up with Giveacar, a social enterprise that collects unwanted and unused cars for charity - turning scrap into cash.
The concept mirrors one that is already popular in the United States and other countries, but which is still very much in its infancy in the UK.
Regardless of their condition, cars are collected free-of-charge nationwide by Giveacar and sold through an online auction, or disposed of in an eco-friendly manner at an Authorised Treatment Facility.
Proceeds from the sale are donated to a charity of the car owner's choice, or one of the Giveacar's partner charities - such as Crossroads - in cases where no specific charity is preferred. Even if the banger is scrapped, it still nets the selected good cause between £40 and £160.
Allison Hardie, Fundraising Manager for Crossroads Caring Scotland, said: "We embrace the principle of the Giveacar scheme - recycling your old car and giving to charity in one fell swoop! It's a new venture for us and we are delighted to be part of it."
Many car owners want an easy and completely free way to get rid of their old car. Giveacar helps them to do this in a legal and environmentally friendly way.
The scheme is intended to discourage those irresponsible owners who may consider abandoning their cars, spoiling the appearance of the local environment and also costing local taxpayers money to remove and dispose of it.
Tom Chance, Chief Executive of Giveacar, welcomed the partnership with Crossroads Caring Scotland. He said: "We're delighted to be associated with Crossroads Caring Scotland. They're a fantastic organisation specialising in home-based respite for carers, which is amongst our top priorities.
"By raising awareness for them through our website, and by talking to vehicle donors, we hope to drive more funds towards Crossroads Caring Scotland and respite charities through car scrapping and auction."
