Green GECCO takes over three onshore wind farms in Germany
Yesterday, Green GECCO GmbH & Co. KG decided to take over the onshore wind farms at Titz (20 megawatts) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hörup (8 megawatts) in Schleswig-Holstein and in Düshorner Heide (26 megawatts) in Lower-Saxony.
- (1888PressRelease) June 22, 2012 - This will grow the portfolio of the joint venture company of 29 municipal utilities and RWE Innogy by 54 megawatts to over 80 megawatts of installed capacity.
"By adding another three wind farms in one go to our portfolio we are demonstrating ways in which renewable energies can be developed hand in hand", explained Dr. Norbert Ohlms, member of the Board of Directors of Green GECCO and representative of the municipal utility partners. "This is because with our third and by far largest investment, we are again realising projects which would hardly be feasible for one of the municipal partners alone."
The company intends to extend the cooperation in the field of electricity and heat production from renewable energy continuously. In this context, German and European projects in the areas of onshore wind power, biomass, geothermal energy, biogas, water and solar thermal energy are in the focus.
"The cooperation with municipal partners is an important element of our investment strategy", explained Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of RWE Innogy. "I am particularly pleased that together we are implementing another repowering project at Hörup apart from the newbuild projects in Titz and Düshorner Heide. This is because we can significantly increase our wind power capacities in Germany especially by modernising existing sites."
The Titz wind farm is situated in the Rhenish mining area in the rural district of Düren in the immediate vicinity of RWE's Garzweiler opencast mine. Once complete, it will comprise ten wind power systems with an installed capacity of 20 megawatts and produce over 50,000 megawatt- hours of electricity per year. This is equivalent to the supply of some 15,000 four-person households. The construction of the wind farm was started late in 2011 as scheduled. It is due to come on stream at the end of this year.
At the Hörup wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein, the four wind power systems currently in operation will be dismantled and replaced by three more powerful new systems as part of a repowering project. This means that the current wind farm will be reduced from four to three wind power systems, while its installed capacity will grow from two to eight megawatts. The new systems will produce about 17,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, enough to supply over 4,800 residential households with climate-friendly energy. The new wind power systems are due to come on stream already at the end of the year.
The Düshorner Heide wind farm is being built in the Heide district of Lower-Saxony. Once complete in March 2013, it will comprise thirteen wind power systems with a total installed capacity of 26 megawatts.
All three projects are being implemented by RWE Innogy and will be handed over to the Green GECCO consortium after their completion.
