Green Education Foundation (GEF) Announces National Green Week 2011
GEF is calling on schools to participate in sustainability education (SE) beginning Feb. 7th through Earth Day (April 22) 2011.
- (1888PressRelease) January 20, 2011 - Green Education Foundation (GEF) is mobilizing millions of students from across the country to participate in National Green Week 2011, a sustainability education (SE) campaign scheduled for the week of February 7-11, 2011. Over two million students participated during last year's event, saving over 100,000 lbs of trash (in just 5 days) and tens of thousands of dollars in utility bills.
National Green Week's 2011 sustainability education lessons are coupled with the hands-on eco-challenges aimed at achieving the following national objectives:
-The Green Energy Challenge, a featured program of National Green Week 2010, provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to audit their schools and homes for energy waste. Participating schools research utility bills and implement simple yet comprehensive changes in an effort to reduce energy costs between Feb. 7 and Earth Day (April 22) 2011. Audit checklists and energy experiments accompany the program.
-In Waste-Free Snacks, students nationwide participate in the largest school-based waste-reduction program of all time by simply pledging to carry their drinks and snacks in reusable containers for the week. The goal is to eliminate 200,000 lbs of trash from schools and landfills.
-The Green Thumb Challenge, join the largest youth gardening initiative, with over 5,000 schools participating in using gardens as a teaching tool. The goal is for 10,000 schools to plant SE gardens. To access GEF's comprehensive school gardening website visit www.greenthumbchallenge.org
Green Education Foundation's (GEF) comprehensive online library provides five day lesson sets that are easily incorporated into science, math, language arts and social studies curricula. U.S. Senator John Kerry recognized the importance of National Green Week as "not only effective in reducing waste but also in providing an interactive way for students to learn about the environment…I urge everyone across the nation to participate." Governors from nearly every state proclaimed National Green Week an official event throughout their state.
"By participating in National Green Week 2011, students will learn that simple decisions such as tuning off lights, adjusting thermostats and packing drinks and snacks in reusable containers can add up to big savings in energy and waste," commented Victoria Waters, president and founder of Green Education Foundation (GEF). "Children are in the best position to impact the future of the environment by developing green behaviors that become lifelong habits."
