Grassroots National Movement Set to Redefine Retirement For Millions of Americans Over 50
Enrich Life Over 50 forges ahead to organize 27 chapters throughout America.
- Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) March 19, 2015 - Enrich Life Over 50 (ELO 50), recently organized with the mission of enhancing the quality of life for people over 50 (50+), held a pilot meeting in the Research Triangle on March 14 to focus on the substantially increased productive engagement and social connection of people 50+. The next three meetings in 2015 will be held in Boston, New York and Denver to establish Chapters in those cities, and ELO50's network of 27 chapters will form in major cities throughout the country over the next four to five years.
The increased longevity of 30 years during the 20th century has been called the country's greatest gift. People 50+ constitute 109 million, or one-third of the total population. They own or control 70 percent of the country's total accumulated private wealth and account for 50 percent of the total annual consumer spending. "Many of these people want or need to continue working" said ELO50 Founder and President Bill Zinke. "They represent an enormous talent pool with what we call Double ESP™; an acronym coined for Experience, Expertise, Seasoned Judgment and Proven Performance. In addition, their average job tenure is more than three times that of people 20-34".
Bill Zinke, at 88, has been focused on baby boomers for more than 15 years. He co-authored a paper with Dr. Elliott Jaques, a renowned social scientist who developed the mid-life crisis concept in 1965, titled "The Evolution of Adulthood: A New Stage," that added to the traditional two stages of 18-40 and 40-62 a third stage from 62-85 where people 50+ can continue to be productively engaged and can continue to add value.
A number of prominent business and academic leaders joined Zinke in kicking off the meeting. William H. Webster, 91, chairman of the Homeland Security Advisory Council and former director of the FBI and the CIA at different times, followed Dr. Janice Wassell, assistant professor of gerontology at UNC Greensboro, in talking about the phenomenal aspects of growing older and continuing to add value. Said Dr. Wassell: "Instead of focusing on retirement, death and dying, this is the first organization I can recall to rally around the phenomenal aspects of growing older and the positive side of aging".
The pilot meeting sets the stage for the 27 new chapters, with the first three to be established later in 2015 in Boston, New York and Denver. Each will have a paid Chapter Head and ten meetings each year, focused on ELO50's "Seven Pillars of Successful Aging."
