Google Launches Update To Core Algorithm After Two Years Of Development
Google has officially confirmed that the Penguin 4.0 update to the algorithm is rolling out in all languages, impacting SEO marketers everywhere in real time.
- (1888PressRelease) October 05, 2016 - Toronto, ON : The Penguin update to Google's core algorithm went live just over a week ago, and BluEnt has been tracking its effects on the web and what it means for the future of SEO. Here is everything you need to know about the Penguin Update for modern search engine optimization.
What is Google Penguin?
enguin is a Google algorithm signal that was first introduced in 2012. Its purpose has always been to target black hat webspam and reward white hat SEO in its search engine rankings. White hat SEO encompasses techniques that improve the usability of a site and support high quality content, whereas black hat webspam focuses on shortcuts or loopholes to induce higher rankings such as keyword stuffing and link schemes.
The Penguin 4.0 Update
This is the most recent update since Penguin 3.0 was launched nearly two years ago in October 2014. The two key changes that Google officially announced on their blog were the following:
1. "Penguin is now real-time." Until now, the list of sites affected by the signal were refreshed periodically all at once. This update will result in much faster changes taking effect shortly after Google recrawls and reindexes a page. As such, future refreshes will no longer be publicized as they have been in the past.
2. "Penguin is now more granular." Instead of spam affecting the ranking of an entire site, it will adjust ranking based on individual spam signals.
Initial Key Insights
The first Penguin modification is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, unintentional webspam changes will be much harder to identify as they will be administered without notice. On the other hand, it will make it significantly more challenging for black hat SEO to cheat the system, resulting in authentic search engine results that are consistently up-to-date. As BluEnt's search engine optimization services have been always been committed to white hat techniques, we see this is a firm step in the right direction.
As for the second part of the release, it is to early to tell how a more granular approach will impact SEO practitioners. First of all, it is unclear on what exact level penalties will be made - some sources assume that they will be carried out on a page-by-page basis, but Google's comments on the matter have been intentionally vague. We predict the potential for black hat specialists taking advantage of the limited consequences of Penguin's impact once it is more established.
Our final expectation overall is that the effects of Penguin 4.0 will take at least a few more weeks to fully roll out. Many webmasters have been disappointed by the lack of noticeable changes since it was released on the 23rd, but both the real-time and granular nature of the update make it an understandably difficult force to detect.
