- (1888PressRelease) June 22, 2013 - Madrid, Spain - The first round of finalists in the third edition of the Google Science Fair includes two groups from Sabadell and Ourense, made up of young people aged between 15 and 16.
The 90 finalists selected by the Google Science Fair for the high quality of their research projects include two Spanish teams made up of bachillerato (pre-university level) school students.
The first group, from Sabadell (Barcelona), is called "¿Hablamos de partículas?" ('Let's talk about particles'). The three young men in this team, Gerard, Yago and Arnau, have come up with the idea of creating cloud chambers to quantify and monitor the behaviour of particles called muons.
The project of the second team, from Ourense, is called "A performance study of sepiolite in arid zone crops". Emma and Sofía propose the use of minerals with high-absorption capacity, such as sepiolite, to optimise water resources in crops and to improve burnt soil to speed up reforestation.
These five students have been very successful in having passed the first round, particularly since there were entries from 120 countries, all of which were excellent and had great innovation capacity. The 15 finalists will get to meet each other at the end of July. For now, the success of Spain's homegrown scientists is something to be applauded.
