  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) November 15, 2012 - GlaxoSmithKline has announced that the Institute for Safe Families (www.instituteforsafefamilies.org) of Philadelphia is a GlaxoSmithKline 16th Annual IMPACT Award recipient. The Philadelphia nonprofit will receive $40,000 for having a significant impact on its community by providing access to proactive and effective healthcare services.

"The Institute for Safe Families is being commended for serving as a change agent and working to make families stronger, healthier and happier," said Mary Linda Andrews, GlaxoSmithKline Director of Community Partnerships.

The Institute for Safe Families was incorporated as a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization in 2001 after starting its nationally-acclaimed family violence prevention initiative under the auspices of Physicians for Social Responsibility in the early nineties. The mission of the organization is to prevent family violence and child abuse by strengthening families to create nurturing, healthy environments that promote children's positive development.

"To be recognized by GlaxoSmithKline for having a 'significant community impact' is a great honor for our organization," said Executive Director Martha Davis. "Basic needs are pressing during these lean economic times, and the funds provided through this award will help us to reach many families with our prevention efforts."

The Institute for Safe Families is best known for community healthcare advocacy programs such as its Children & Mom's Project (CAMP), Family Safe Zone and Ace Task Force, among others.

    • CAMP is a prevention initiative that works with several Philadelphia children's hospitals, pediatric settings and partners with domestic violence agencies to help pediatric sites develop services to protect children from family violence, abuse and other adverse experiences.

    • The Family Safe Zone initiative was developed for and is implemented in Philadelphia hospitals - designed to assess for, intervene in and prevent child abuse.

    • Among the latest of the organization's initiatives, the Ace Task Force is a group of doctors and scholars who joined to investigate the who, what, where, when and how of adverse childhood experiences (or ACEs) across the country and in Philadelphia, and their implications for intervention in pediatric settings.
