Gift Of Life Marrow Registry, PSI CRO Launch ‘World Swab Tour’ To Celebrate World Marrow Donor Day
Fourth annual global celebration will thank marrow donors for their generosity in saving the lives of strangers.
- (1888PressRelease) September 15, 2018 - To mark World Marrow Donor Day tomorrow, September 15, Gift of Life Marrow Registry and PSI CRO have teamed up to launch the 2018 World Swab Tour to recruit volunteers to the international marrow registry to save lives of those with blood cancers and other genetic diseases.
Gift of Life, a Boca Raton-based marrow registry and PSI CRO, a Durham, N.C.-based global clinical research firm with offices in Europe, Africa, the Asia-Pacific, Latin America and North America are holding cheek swab drives to encourage people to join the registry. PSI CRO staffers in Durham, Philadelphia and San Francisco are also participating.
Each year Gift of Life also participates in World Marrow Donor Day by publicly thanking donors for their generosity in giving stem cells or bone marrow to save the life of a stranger. The international day of recognition for marrow donors was founded by the World Marrow Donor Association and falls on the third Saturday of September annually.
All week staffers at PSI CRO offices in Durham, Philadelphia and San Francisco, and in Argentina, France, Hungary, Italy, India, South Africa and the United Kingdom, along with Gift of Life Campus Ambassadors at colleges nationwide, are organizing donor recruitment drives and spreading awareness via social media campaigns of the importance of joining the registry.
Campus Ambassadors are a key force in the campaign to find matches for those with blood cancer. Transplant doctors seek donors aged 18-25 more than 90 percent of the time, because this demographic produces the most stem cells and is the healthiest population, meaning a better chance of success for the patient. Since launching in 2014, 361 campus ambassadors have volunteered more than 11,800 hours to add 32,787 people to the registry, resulting in 45 life-saving matches
Since its start in 1991, Gift of Life has grown the registry to more than 308,000 individuals who have donated blood stem cells or bone marrow to save a life. In the process, Gift of Life has facilitated over 15,000 matches, resulting in more than 3,300 transplants.
