Gift of Life Marrow Registry Partners with Florida Blue to Save Lives
Donor recruitment drive to be held during Black History Month.
- (1888PressRelease) January 30, 2018 - Cancer is a random killer and it can strike any one of us at any time. The Gift of Life Marrow Registry and Florida Blue are teaming up on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 to recruit bone marrow donors to help patients suffering from blood cancer in need of a transplant.
Many types of leukemia, lymphoma and other genetic diseases can be treated or cured through bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants. Many patients, however, never find a lifesaving donor in time, especially African American and Black Caribbeans who are underreprestend in the registry. In honor of Black History Month, a donor recruitment drive will take place at Florida Blue Boynton Beach Center, 1501 N. Congress Ave., Boynton Beach, Fla., from 5:00-6:30 pm. to raise awareness of the importance to diversify the registry.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drive. It’s fast and painless. If you are between the ages of 18 and 45 and in general good health, you are eligible to be screened and join the worldwide registry for patients in need. A simple swab from the inside of your cheek is all it takes to determine if you are a match.
“We are extremely proud to partner with Gift of Life Marrow Registry and host them at our Center location,” said Florida Blue Boynton Beach Center Director David Dunston. “The Gift of Life organization allows us to fulfill our Florida mission of – ‘to help people and communities achieve better health’”.
African Americans and Black Caribbeans face a tremendous challenge when it comes to cancer: it is the second highest cause of death and they have the highest death rate and shortest survival time of any racial/ethnic group in the United States for most cancers. Also, the incidence of childhood cancer is rising for African Americans, particularly Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Sickle Cell Disease which occur in one out of every 365 births.
