Gift of Life Marrow Registry Campus Ambassadors to Host Donor Drive at Monroe Pride Festival to Fight Blood Cancer
Every donor is evaluated based on the same medical criteria, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identification or ethnicity.
- (1888PressRelease) June 09, 2022 - Cancer is a random killer. It can strike any one of us at any time. For many patients battling leukemia, lymphoma, or other genetic diseases, there is hope of a cure through a marrow transplant. That is, of course, if a donor can be found.
Gift of Life Marrow Registry Campus Ambassadors from the University of Washington and American University (Wash, D.C.) have teamed up to host a recruitment drive to register potential blood stem cell and bone marrow donors at the Monroe Pride Festival. The drive, scheduled on June 12, 2022, will run from 1 - 4:00 PM (PT) at Skykomish River Park, 413 Sky River Parkway, Monroe, Wash.
Gift of Life recently launched its “Swab With Pride” national campaign to encourage potential donors from the LGBTQ+ community to join the registry. While gay men, especially, have faced challenges to giving whole blood at blood banks, such restrictions do not apply to the transplant of stem cells and bone marrow, which are considered to be tissue donation.
Anyone 18 to 35 years old and in general good health may join the registry. A simple swab from the inside of your cheek is all it takes to determine if you are a match. Every donor is evaluated based on the same medical criteria, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identification or ethnicity.
Through Gift of Life Marrow Registry, members of the LGBTQ+ community can engage in the lifesaving community service many have wished for.
“Donating bone marrow as a gay man felt empowering,” said Tony Joe Connell, a Gift of Life bone marrow donor. “When I first met my recipient, Brianne, face-to-face, it was incredible – what a remarkable person she is! Our LGBTQ+ community has endured a lot, both good and bad, but something that has not changed is our unwavering power of kindness. Get out there, register, and help save a life.”
