Gift of Life Marrow Registry Announces New Board Member
Transplant recipient and leukemia survivor has made it his goal to grow the marrow registry.
- (1888PressRelease) March 30, 2018 - The Gift of Life Marrow Registry announced its newest board member, Dr. Stephen Colen, a seasoned plastic surgeon based in New York City. As a board member he will promote and grow the organization’s mission to cure blood cancer and will be involved in long-term planning. Gift of Life is a non-profit bone marrow registry that facilitates marrow and blood stem cell transplants for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood-related diseases.
Dr. Colen was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2012. With no donors in his family, he turned to Gift of Life’s worldwide marrow registry in search for a match and ultimately received two bone marrow transplants. Today, Dr. Colen is in remission and has made it his goal to grow the registry to help others like himself. The Colen family has embarked on efforts to recruit donors, and raise the funds for testing, as each volunteer donor’s registration costs $60.
“As our newest board member, Dr. Colen is joining a team of past donors, recipients, and volunteers with a passion for saving lives,” says Gift of Life Founder and CEO Jay Feinberg. “We are excited about the unique perspective Dr. Colen will bring to the board as a doctor and a bone marrow recipient.”
Dr. Colen received a B.S. degree from St. Lawrence University in 1967, a D.D.S. degree from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1971, and his M.D. from Hahnemann Medical College in 1974. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery and Plastic Surgery at NYU Medical Center’s Institute of Plastic Surgery, and Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Colen also holds appointments at Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He is also Professor of Plastic Surgery and founding chair of Seton Hall Medical School.
