With ghostly tales of 'Jimmy' who hung himself and is said to be still heard roaming the area. The mysterious figure of a woman is seen waiting in the wings of the theatre. - (1888PressRelease) July 25, 2014 - Darlington civic was formally opened in 1907; it is constructed from local Middlesbrough red brick with terracotta dressings. With an ornamental canopy which is in fact a replica of the original iron and glass structure, which was destroyed by a traffic accident in the 1960s.
The theatre did amazing well during the first 20yrs and this was put down to the managing director Signor Pepi, who sadly passed away in 1927 and in the following few years its future became uncertain.
Many Ghost Sightings have been reported and documented throughout the theatre, one of the most common is of a man dressed in evening formal wear and believed to be the original managing director of the museum: Signor Rino Pepi.
There have also been reports of a dog which has been seen and it is believed that this dog is associated with Pepi. The mysterious figure of a female has also been spotted numerous times waiting in the wings could this be 12 year Arabella who is another frequent ghost sighting who is usually heard sobbing in dressing room 12? .
There is also a spirit called Jimmy who haunts the areas above the stage who was the Flyman back in the day. It is said that Jimmy hung himself from the fly floor and his presence can still be felt and can be heard at times ascending or descending the ladders from the Fly Floor to the stage.
With so many reported and well documented sightings we are bursting with enthusiasm to make our first visit to this wonderful theatre and hope you will dare to join us too!
