  • (1888PressRelease) May 12, 2011 - Raleigh, NC - GCFLearnFree.org recently launched several free mobile apps in an effort to better achieve its mission of supplying educational content to anyone, anywhere, for free.

The first application launched for use on the iPhone was GCF Vocabulary Videos. The application currently includes over 400 videos and is targeted for use by adult learners and English-language learners. Part of the GCFLearnFree.org's adult Reading Program, this mobile application introduces everyday words through the use of animation, situations, and guided imagery that helps increase comprehension.

Mobile app tutorials for Word 2010, Excel 2010, and PowerPoint 2010 are also now available. All three applications are available on both iPhone and Android devices. Based on the popular Microsoft Office tutorials available at GCFLearnFree.org, all mobile applications are free to download.

The Microsoft Office tutorial apps explore program basics and common tasks and delve even deeper to work with more complex features. Instructional step-by-step text is accompanied by graphics and videos.

According to the International Telecommunications Union, worldwide Internet users surpassed the two billion mark in 2010. While high speed Internet is out of reach for many people in low-income countries, mobile phone use is spreading rapidly, with mobile networks now available to over 90% of the world's population. The largest growth of new Internet users is from developing countries as 143 countries now offer 3G services.

It was with this in mind that these mobile applications, along with the mobile version of the site (m.GCFLearnFree.org), were created in an effort to share content with even more learners globally.

All content available through GCF Mobile Apps continues to be available through GCFLearnFree.org.

"With over 30,000 downloads of our mobile apps thus far, the applications' success have exceeded our expectations. We're excited to know that as Internet use rises globally through the use of smartphones, GCFLearnFree.org will be prepared to provide educational content to more global learners," states Matt Robinson, GCFLearnFree.org.

GCFLearnFree.org plans to launch new mobile applications based on the most requested topics by learners and as new lessons are created. In the coming months, mobile applications will also be available on additional devices, including iPad.
