- Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA (1888PressRelease) July 09, 2010 - SEATTLE, July 8, 2010 - The Minority Bar Associations of Washington recently named Garvey Schubert Barer as the top ranking firm in its second annual "Law Firm Diversity Report."
"Diversity has long been one of our core values. Through diversity, not only do we enhance our ability to provide clients with innovative thinking and insightful solutions, but we also create a vibrant and exciting workplace community," said Anne Preston, chair of Garvey Schubert Barer. "While we are proud of our diversity record, we continually strive to improve it. Our goal is to be the leader on the road towards positive change, promoting diversity within the legal profession and beyond."
The survey was created by a coalition of 11 minority bar associations: the Asian Bar Association of Washington, Filipino Lawyers of Washington, Korean American Bar Association of Washington, Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, Loren Miller Bar Association, Middle Eastern Legal Association of Washington, Northwest Indian Bar Association, QLaw (the GLBT Bar Association of Washington), South Asian Bar Association of Washington, Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington and Washington Women Lawyers.
The report surveyed the 50 largest firms in Washington State on their commitment to diversity. The survey sought detailed demographic information regarding the racial/ethnic, gender, sexual orientation and disability status of attorneys, as well as diversity efforts and programs undertaken by the firms. Four separate scores were then awarded for diversity efforts related to ethnic minority, females, gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender and disabled attorneys. The scores were averaged with incremental points added for various factors not specific to any category and overall grade was assigned.
Per the survey results, the firms that performed best had strong initiatives and execution in the areas of recruiting, hiring, mentoring, promoting and retaining diverse attorneys. Garvey Schubert Barer received the top overall score at 88.31. The firm was also among the top scorers in demographics and efforts related to ethnic minority, females, gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender and disabled attorneys.
Sponsoring many diversity-related events within the legal industry, Garvey Schubert Barer endorses and supports the strong commitment to diversity expressed by the American Bar Association, the 2004 Association of Corporate Counsel's Call to Action, BellSouth Corporation's Diversity in the Workplace: A Statement of Principle and many other regional and national initiatives designed to embrace diversity in the legal profession.
The firm also reflects its support of a diverse workforce in the programs and benefits it offers employees, and a number of Garvey Schubert Barer attorneys and staff are active and hold leadership positions in diversity-related organizations.
