- Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA (1888PressRelease) August 26, 2011 - Garvey Schubert Barer Founder Michael D. Garvey and his wife, Lynn Garvey, have been selected as 2011 Gates Volunteer Service Award recipients. The Gates Service Award, given annually by the University of Washington and the University of Washington Foundation, honors community members who have made exemplary contributions through time, service and philanthropy to the University of Washington and whose efforts have encouraged others to support the university.
The award is modeled after the example set by the William H. Gates family. William H. Gates, Sr. is the father of Microsoft co-founder William H. ("Bill") Gates, Jr. and a graduate of the University of Washington (UW). First given in 2002, the award is the next iteration of the UW Recognition Award, which was bestowed from 1976 to 2001.
"Mike's dedication to his alma mater is unparalleled. He has proven time and again, whether through the leadership and counsel he provides at Garvey Schubert Barer or through his sustained involvement within the greater Washington state community, to be a true role model. Every attorney here is deeply honored to be associated with him and his legacy," said Anne Preston, Chair of Garvey Schubert Barer.
Garvey's University of Washington roots run deep. He founded Garvey Schubert Barer with two of his classmates from the UW School of Law, and he also received his undergraduate degree from the institution.
Garvey left the firm in 1982 to form Saltchuk Resources, Inc., a Seattle-based maritime holding company which has grown into a portfolio of at least 20 operating businesses and combined annual revenues of $1.5 billion.
Throughout his career, Garvey has remained active with the University of Washington. He is a current member of the UW Medical Board, a past member of the Advisory Board of the Foster School of Business and previously served as the Business School's Edward V. Fritzky Chair in Leadership, a faculty position designed to put distinguished business leaders on campus to share their expertise with faculty and students.
