Gale scoops prestigious ISG Reference Award from CILIP for outstanding e-resources
Gale, part of global publisher Cengage Learning (www.cengage.co.uk), is celebrating having won the Besterman/McColvin Award in the 'Outstanding works of electronic resources and e-books' category for The Illustrated London News Historical Archive, 1842-2003, at the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals' (CILIP) ISG Reference Awards (www.cilip.org.uk/isg).
- (1888PressRelease) October 29, 2011 - The awards were judged by a panel of librarians from across academic and public libraries who selected Gale from the eligible 2010 entries. Gale was also Highly Commended in the same category for its product, The Picture Post Historical Archive, 1938-1957. The award ceremony, which took place at CILIP in London on 24th October 2011, celebrates best practice in the information and reference sector and sets industry standards.
The Illustrated London News Historical Archive, 1842-2003, offers students and researchers online access to the entire run of the ILN from its first publication on 14 May 1842 to its last in 2003. Effectively the 'TV of its day', it provides an unrivalled pictorial chronicle of Britain and the world from the early Victorian era to the late twentieth century. Each page has been digitally reproduced in full colour and the text of each article and caption is full-text searchable with hit-term highlighting and links to corresponding illustrations. The addition of article and illustration categories allows users to carry out narrow searches and pinpoint results. Facsimiles of these articles and illustrations can be viewed, printed and saved either individually or in the context of the page in which they appear.
The Picture Post Historical Archive, 1938-1957 consists of the complete, fully searchable facsimile archive of The Picture Post, the iconic newspaper published in Britain from 1938-1957 that defined the style of photojournalism in the 20th century. The Picture Post provides students and researchers with online access to a unique visual record of the 1930s to 1950s - from the humorous and light-hearted snapshots of daily life to the serious and history defining moments of domestic and international affairs.
Linden Harris, Publishing Director, Cengage Learning EMEA, comments: "We are delighted that Cengage Learning's Illustrated London News and Picture Post digital archives have been recognised by CILIP. These unique archives provide both text and visual views of the past and open up this new range of primary sources to audiences worldwide. To be awarded Outstanding eResource and Highly Commended by the professional information and library community is testament to the quality of the Illustrated London News and Picture Post publications and to the research environment these digital archives provide. Both offer remarkable pictorial coverage of all aspects of culture, politics and society and insights from contemporary writers and commentators.
"For users who already have access to other digitised newspapers in our collection, such as The Times Digital Archive and Financial Times Historical Archive, the Illustrated London News and Picture Post digital archives provide additional - and highly visual - avenues and in-roads into research of the period."
The CILIP ISG Judging Panel commented: "Our assessment categories included areas such as scope, accessibility (including remote access), printing/downloading options; quality of indexing and navigational aids, and the authority of the content. The Picture Post archive provides access to a unique and highly visual resource, useful to academic researchers as well as family and local historians. The Illustrated London News Historical Archive combines these attributes with high quality breadth of information and so just edged the vote to be the overall winner."
