Fun Sculptures at Corp Executive Hotel Apartments - Al Barsha
Fun Sculptures, a unique exhibition of figurative works by Australian-born sculptress and painter, Amanda Ovington opened last evening at Corp Executive Hotel Apartments in Al Barsha.
- (1888PressRelease) May 23, 2011 - The collection includes over 25 eclectic pieces that will be on display until June 1, 2011.
Cute, ugly, colorful, crazy, strange inspires Amanda for whom art is FUN. She says, "My work makes people laugh or even shocks them sometime. I like to entertain with my art with a fun feeling to it. I also like to imagine a story that goes along with the sculptures to give them personality which is again fun for me."
Growing up in a tiny town in a valley with beautiful green pastures and farms alongside a river gave Amanda the opportunity to be surrounded by vivid rural life pictures full of colorful vegetable patches, animals, blooming landscapes... She recalls, "Growing up in Towamba was such an enjoyable experience… we were free to hop on our pushbikes and explore. Definitely the lack of commercial toys forced us to use our imagination. We would build our own means of entertainment from billy carts and hammocks to tree houses. This really enhanced my creativity and imagination."
Perfection is something Amanda finds boring. "I don't like the normal. I love to be expressive with my artwork, I love the way you can change tiny bits on a face to change an expression or a look. I also love to exaggerate certain things e.g I love to make big lips, bony hands or a strange posture."
Amanda believes clay is the most convenient means of giving shape to her imagination. Art for her comes from within. Her love for art began in school with art being her favorite subject. She says, "Even though I have not really studied art professionally, I am always interested in learning about different art, artists and styles."
According to Aamir Pervez, General Manager, Corp Executive Hotel Apartments, "We pride ourselves on establishing as a centre for artistic initiatives, reflecting the dynamic and modern brand profile of Corp as a hotel chain, and we are delighted to welcome Amanda Ovington with her very distinctive style which I am sure will prove a hit with our guests".
Amanda moved to Dubai to join an airline company. She says, "I had lots of spare time in my hands and felt I needed some art and culture in my life, so I joined the Dubai International Art Centre's sculpture class. Since then, I never turned back producing more than 25 pieces in a little more than 2 years. I developed my own style and started working even without sleep sometime when returning from a long flight."
She adds, "My Fiancé is the person that best supported me, although at first he thought it was a passing activity. But ever since he realized my love and passion for art he has always been very proud of me and encourages me to fulfill my dreams."
Amanda's biggest inspiration comes from Picasso. "I love how Picasso distorts the human or animal figures to make them look interesting. Also I love his use of bold colors and the shapes and lines he uses.
And how has Dubai contributed to her style? "Dubai offers a fast growing environment with different impulses than those of the nature where I take my inspiration from. Some of my figures with human expressions represent the anxieties of such a fast growing metropolis for sure. Also the wide range of cultures that we work with and live nearby, definitely give me inspiration when building different faces and body types".
