From Vision To Reality: Sheikh Khalifa’s Legacy Revolutionizes Cancer Care In The UAE
After assuming the presidency in 2004, the late President Sheikh Khalifa made the well-being of UAE residents a key focus of his strategic development plan. As a result, his vision came to be through the major expansion of cancer care facilities throughout the UAE. Over the years, the number of these facilities increased from merely two to over a dozen, with four prominent hospitals established under his name to cater to patients nationwide.

Shortly after Sheikh Khalifa died, a well-known Emirati doctor paid tribute to his memory by sharing that he had changed cancer care worldwide. The head of the Emirates Oncology Society, Humaid Al Shamsi, said that a cancer treatment center in Houston, Texas, received a donation of $150 million. This donation helped the professional growth of many oncologists in the United States.
The biggest cancer center in the US, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre, received huge funding in 2011. This is where many Emiratis have gone to get skilled medical care. The school also set up fellowship programs to help people learn more about oncology.
The director of oncology at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Al Shamsi, shared that Sheikh Khalifa and his organization have made a big difference in cancer care worldwide. But many people might not know the facts about his efforts. He further expressed that when Sheikh Khalifa became president for the first time in 2004, there were only a few hospitals that could treat cancer. At the time he looked, he saw that there were only two hospitals. But there are now many more hospitals, like the Sheikh Khalifa hospitals in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah. The speaker also stated that anyone with an Emirates ID who is a citizen of the UAE can get free medical care at these hospitals, no matter their health situation. The speaker said that the hospital in Ras Al Khaimah had also become a well-known place for cancer care in the Northern Emirates.
The foundation partnered with MD Anderson because it is a world-class research center. Over the years, many people from the UAE have received treatment there. The school has a long-standing relationship with strong and well-known research programs.
The foundation paid for the building of the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Building, a 55,740-square-meter building on 2 hectares of MD Anderson’s main site. The center combines basic and clinical research to provide individualized cancer treatment. The Khalifa Institute for Personalised Cancer Therapy and the Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Centre for Pancreatic Cancer Research are in the same building.
Through the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation’s grant program, Emiratis can do fellowships, residency programs, postgraduate studies, and observerships at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Mayo Clinic.
MD Anderson chooses Khalifa Scholars from its faculty-level doctors and researchers. These people then get paid for one to two years to pay for their own research projects.
