Free Skin Cancer Screening at Poway Dermatology May 4, 2015

- San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) April 10, 2015 - MELANOMA MONDAY FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENING EVENT.
WHAT: Poway Dermatology's board-certified dermatologist (Patrick Blake, MD), in conjunction with the American Academy of Dermatology's Spot Skin Cancer campaign, is offering full or partial skin exams at no charge. Each exam takes about 10 minutes. If a concerning lesion is identified, patients will be referred for biopsies.

WHY: To raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, and to encourage early detection through self-exams, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday®.
- On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. Melanoma is the most common cancer for young adults.
- When caught early, skin cancer - including melanoma - is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. When diagnosed at a late stage, survival drops to 16%.
- The AAD's Spot Skin Cancer volunteers have conducted more than 2.4 million screenings, detected over 200,000 suspicious lesions, and exposed over 26,000 potential melanomas since the launch of the program in 1985.
