  • Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) September 13, 2011 - The outstanding talents of Frederick-area filmmakers will be showcased this October as the 72 Film Fest returns for its sixth year. This two-day festival will be held at Frederick's Weinberg Center for the Arts Oct. 7-8. The historic venue will screen over 35 movies made (that is, conceived, written, filmed, and edited) within the 72-hour time period of the weekend prior. As has been the case in past years, the event organizers anticipate a blend of veteran filmmaker, amateur, and student participants.

In the past, themes have included "Fairy Tales," "First Lines of Books," and "Polaroids," but every year has centered around two commonalities: influence and inspiration. Clues to this year's theme have focused on "telephones," but no additional details will be released until the launch party on September 29. At the party, teams will be given specific criteria that they will need to include in their films.

"All we can say is what we've been doing this whole time will finally make sense," organizer Clark Kline said, "Friday night will be a grand experiment, maybe even something that has never been done before. At least not quite like this."

Many returning teams have already registered, along with a plethora of new students, amateurs, and pros. The festival is not only a contest, but also a representation of the many talented filmmakers, actors, writers, and other screen artists in the area.

The two-night event will have something for everyone, with many moments that will hearken back to previous years. Those new to the festival are encouraged to attend Saturday night's main event, while those wanting to see everything local filmmakers have to offer should attend both nights.

The films entered in the festival will be judged by industry professionals, and awards will be given for acting, writing, audience choice and the coveted "Best of the Fest."

The 72 Film Fest is pleased to welcome a new sponsor to the Fest, Flying Dog Brewery. Local to Frederick, Flying Dog continues to support events like the 72 Film Fest to build on their "Support Local Creativity" campaign.

"The 72 Film Fest is a great way for people to try their hand at making cool and interesting films under a unique set of guidelines," Ben Savage, VP of Marketing at Flying Dog, said. "This Fest is all about overcoming the fear and pressure of the deadline to make something truly thoughtful and entertaining, and its something that Flying Dog is excited to be a part of. "

2011 will be the last year to experience 72 Film Fest in the way it originated. The Fest will return in 2012 with a whole new structure, including a brand new contest to be announced at this year's festival.

Prizes given out to winning Filmmakers this year include a Red Epic Camera Rental sponsored by Archai Media, a Canon T2i Camera, Limited Edition Cineskates Slider, actor headshots from 1513foto, a special Audience Choice prize from Mac Business Solutions, and much more.
