Fourth Grade Students Visit Ava Gardner Museum to Supplement their Studies of North Carolina History

Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) January 09, 2011 - As part of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, students study the history of North Carolina within the fourth grade Social Studies curriculum. During this year, fourth graders study famous North Carolinians and are often assigned to do a report on one NC citizen of note. For this reason, the Ava Gardner Museum offers student packets to those students that have chosen to study North Carolina's most celebrated daughter, Ava Gardner.

Over 300 elementary age children visit the Museum each year and are introduced to one of North Carolina's most famous entertainers. Children visiting the Museum begin their tour by seeing a 17-minute video on Ava's life. Students can then take the self-guided tour through the internationally known institution to view permanent and rotating exhibits. The collection, which contains over 20,000 items, consists largely of paper artifacts in the way of movie posters, lobby cards, magazines, newspaper clippings, screenplays, and photography. Also included in the collection are film costumes, personal clothing, awards, china, jewelry, and fine art, including 40 portraits by Bert Pfeiffer, an artist whose collection was donated to the museum in 2001.

Children visiting the Museum for research on school projects are given student packets, free of charge. These educational packets include: a short bio of Ava's life, information about the history of the Ava Gardner Museum, a list of famous quotes by Ava, a Filmography, and photos of Ava.

Students that are not able to visit the Museum may write or call the Museum for the student packet to use for their writing projects.

The Ava Gardner Museum is located in downtown Smithfield, at 325 E. Market Street and more information may be found on the museum website, www.avagardner.org or by calling 919-934-5830. The museum is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday 2pm-5pm with admission of $6.00 adults, $5.00 seniors, military and groups, and $4.00 children aged 6-12 (children under 6 free).
