University of North Carolina Hospitals, University of Washington Medical Center, The University of Kansas Hospital and University of Kentucky Hospital — all members of the Oak Brook, Illinois-based University HealthSystem Consortium — have implemented Physician Insight Plus to compare their physicians' performance both internally and to selected UHC cohorts within the Consortium. The transparency of the UHC comparative data allows academic medical centers to identify best-practices and more effectively collaborate with other Consortium members on performance benchmarks.
"We wanted to put comprehensive, transparent data in the hands of our clinicians in an easy to understand fashion that gives them the opportunity to continuously compare and improve their performance," said Glen F. Spivak, MBA, vice president, Operational Efficiency, UNC Hospitals. "Physician Insight Plus allows us to easily and efficiently distribute data throughout the enterprise with minimal IT resources, enabling clinicians to monitor and manage their progress and improve patient care."
Physician Insight Plus reveals relationships between operational and quality performance in a single intuitive view, allowing users to select from multiple cohorts or product lines to benchmark cost and quality performance. Physicians can drill down to detailed comparisons and case-level data to measure their performance on Length of Stay (LOS); Hospital Cost; Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) indicators; Readmission Rate and Mortality.
"Data serves as the foundation of our clinical quality and performance improvement programs," said Lee A. Norman, M.D., MHS, MBA, vice president, chief medical officer, The University of Kansas Hospital. "The Physician Insight Plus dashboard functions as my primary tool for quick, actionable data-mining and allows me to track, analyze and compare performance across the organization."
The dashboard also provides chief medical officers with the ability to address physician attribution and to identify best practices to improve quality, utilization and to contribute to meeting regulatory mandates of Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE).
"Using the BI innovations pioneered at the Cleveland Clinic, Carefx is pleased to provide academic medical center executives and clinicians the tools to monitor, evaluate and improve clinical performance," said Andrew Hurd, CEO, Carefx. "The ability to compare performance with peers and to identify best practices on a risk-adjusted basis is the first step towards improving outcomes and achieving accountable care."
