Foundation for a Drug Free World Gets Residents the Truth About Drugs In Honor of World Health Day
With an estimated 200 million people consuming illegal drugs every year internationally, the Foundation for a Drug Free World took to the streets of the Tampa Bay area to get residents "The Truth About Drugs."
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) April 11, 2013 - In honor of World Health Day, members of the Foundation for a Drug Free World distributed more than 3,000 "Truth About Drugs" booklets in the Tampa Bay area. The booklets were distributed at Clearwater Beach, Tarpon Springs and Tampa.
Peggy Cote, one of the volunteers who participated in the booklet distribution said "The people are so grateful for the work that we are doing. You hand them the booklet and they respond with a "WOW! THIS IS GREAT!" That was from people of all ages. I heard stories about pill parties, prescription drug addiction and 12 and 13 year olds dying from Spice, the synthetic marijuana. It is a sad state of affairs."
The booklet is one in a series of booklets that educate young people on the dangers of drugs such as Ecstasy, heroin, LSD and - very pertinent to our area - prescription pain killers. This particular booklet is an overview of the rest of the series. It includes information on why people abuse drugs, what the drugs do to a person physically and what the mental effects of drugs are.
The printing of the booklets is sponsored by the Church of Scientology. The Church supports the Truth About Drugs program, one of the world's largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns.
This support began a little more than two decades ago, when Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard noted "Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs."
Working alongside other drug abuse prevention and education groups and law enforcement, the Church and its members have helped fund and disseminate educational materials - drug education booklets, a full length documentary entitled "The Truth About Drugs" and Public Service Announcements (the award-winning "They Said - They Lied" PSAs).
The Church of Scientology has published Scientology: How We Help-The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, a brochure to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports.
