Foundation for a Drug-Free South Helps Prevent Crime with National Night Out
The Foundation for a Drug-Free South will participate in the activities for National Night Out Against Crime this year with presentations and booklet distribution.
- (1888PressRelease) July 20, 2012 - According to data obtained from the Nashville Police website, crime has decreased and stabilized in recent years, after its peak in 1995 when there were over 11,000 crimes in Davidson County. This does not mean that crime is no longer an issue, as the numbers remain stably above 6,000 each year, and if anything mean that more work is needed to continue decreasing these numbers.
That is where National Night Out Against Crime comes into play. According to nationaltownwatch.org, "National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back."
Last year the Foundation for a Drug-Free South (a chapter of the international Foundation For A Drug-Free World) participated in National Night Out Against Crime by distributing the Truth About Drugs booklets and giving lecture presentations to the community in Edgehill.
The Foundation has been invited back again, as the lecture and materials were well received from the previous year. "These booklets contain the truth about drugs, and when people read them, they are able to make a well-informed decision to stay away from drugs," says Brian Fesler who coordinates the local program.
"We have a message to get out to our youth-and adults!" says Fesler, "We have a personal responsibility to get these materials out into the neighborhood so people aren't caught in the drug trap."
