Forbes Living to Report on Dating Websites in an Upcoming Segment
Forbes Living will look at the controversy over OK Cupid experimenting on its users without their knowledge.
- Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) August 04, 2014 - The Forbes Living TV show will examine the issues of ethicality when a website decides to conduct experiments that cast its registered users in the role of guinea pigs. First, it was Facebook, and most recently (as far as anyone knows), dating website OK Cupid has been caught performing an experiment at the expense of its users. What the operators of OK Cupid did, was to send selected members the profiles of prospective partners and tell the recipients that the company's computers had deduced that these people would be the perfect match for them. Unfortunately, this was a lie and the administrators knew full well that these particular matches were completely inappropriate for the recipients in question. The point of the experiment was to see if those who received these matches would believe the hype they were told about what perfect matches these were, as opposed to the information they would get by simply reading the profiles sent to them. One would think that those searching for mates would weigh the profile information over some simple e-mail from OK Cupid's computers. One might also feel that to take advantage of people who have bravely bared their souls in the search for a partner is a detestable thing for the website to do.
