Food Contact Stainless Steel Requirements Updated in Italy

SGS looks at recent changes to Italian rules concerning food contact stainless steels. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) February 10, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders to review Italy’s recent amendments to its requirements for food contact stainless steel products.

Decree of the Ministry of Health No. 208 was issued on January 19, 2023, and came into effect on February 3, 2023. It amends Decree of the Minister for Health of March 21, 1973 – ‘Hygiene rules for packaging, containers and utensils intended to come into contact with foodstuffs or personal use products’ – in relation to stainless steels. It also revises Decree of the Minister of Health No. 72 of May 9, 2019.

Stakeholders should be aware of two important changes:
1. Adds stainless steel with numerical designation 1.4062 under UNI EN 10088-1:2014 ‘Stainless Steels Part 1 – List of Stainless Steels’ to the positive list. This type of stainless steel is also designated as UNS S32202
2. Adds one entry specifying the list of added elements that are permitted in food contact stainless steels that are not on the positive list, provided these are exclusively for the manufacture of kitchen and tableware that are intended for repeated short duration use at hot or ambient temperatures (entry n to Part B of amendment)
