  • (1888PressRelease) July 18, 2013 - LOS ANGELES, CA - Follea, Inc. announces the introduction of the hair industry's first product registration system to address the growing problem of premium brand counterfeiting. It is featured on Follea's new website, www.follea.com. As the world's leading designer and manufacturer of natural European hair wigs, Topette® hairpieces and extensions, Follea created this product registration system so that customers can verify that they have purchased an authentic "Follea" product and not a counterfeit product. Follea strives to eliminate fraudulent practices emanating from outsourced factories that produce subpar added-hair products and frequently subject their workers to unacceptable conditions and poverty-level compensation.

"If a woman buys a Chanel® brand dress, she expects it to be from Chanel. With hair it is more difficult. Hair has not been registered in the past, but Follea's premium quality European hair is a serious purchase and our clients need to be protected from unscrupulous would-be fraudsters. We believe this industry-first registration system will help," says Follea President Michael Leigh.

The product registration system allows a Follea wearer to enter the Follea model, serial number, label information, purchase date, store name, contact information and additional information . The customer is immediately alerted if her serial number does not represent a genuine Follea product. Through reports of counterfeit products, Follea will be able to build a knowledge base about who is creating counterfeit added hair, who is supplying it, and where the outsourced factory might be located.

Follea Technical Expert and Educator Holly Slear shares these tips to prevent customers from purchasing counterfeit wigs:

    1. "See examples of authentic Follea labels in our product registration instructions.

    2. The hair should look and feel natural. It should move naturally and not have an artificial-looking brassy shine.

    3. Knots on the wig should be small and well tightened, not large and knobby. If significant amounts of hair fall out when the hair is brushed, it is not a Follea product.

    4. Watch for websites that use unauthorized and misleading images from legitimate manufacturers without permission. Follea has warned several companies to remove Follea copyright images from their website, such as a China-based company that has no physical presence in the UK, although their website is wigshow.co.uk ."

Counterfeit wigs are made by outsourced factories that might acquire a genuine Follea hairpiece, and then copy it using inferior materials and "swept-off-the-floor" hair. This hair is made soft by removing the hair cuticle in a vat of acid, and is typically silicone-coated before delivery. However, once this hair is shampooed a few times and the silicone washes out, it becomes matted and tangled. Russian and European hair that Follea acquires is sourced from willing donors, and it can cost more than five times that of so-called Indian Remy temple hair, which might be four times more expensive than swept-off-the-floor hair.

The illegal manufacturing of counterfeit hair products often involves workers being subjected to sweat shop-like conditions: no air conditioning or heat, unsanitary facilities, long work hours, improper protection from fumes, and more.

Unusual in the industry, Follea owns its own factory. The company employs hundreds of highly trained artisans, many of whom choose to live at Follea dormitories that feature computers and a modern kitchen served by three full-time chefs. Artisans carefully sort the hair, create and blend the color of the hair, make the foundation of the wigs, and sew Follea hairpieces.
