  • (1888PressRelease) January 20, 2012 - Pinellas County Short Sale Realtor Wendy Smith shares this useful information with the citizens of Florida. Floridians should know about the Sustainable Floridians Master Volunteer Program which was launched by the Pinellas County Extension, piloted in the state in 2010-2011 wherein only select counties and agents worked with interested citizens, volunteers, and government teams.

The program's mission statement is: "To train and inspire a core of volunteers to deliver information to residents on the significance of sustainability; the value of lifestyle choices and its impact on the environment; and the challenge to share the responsibility for protecting Earth's limited resources."

The Sustainable Floridian Program relies on volunteers who have an interest in protecting the environment and giving back to their communities as it is a volunteer-driven program that will benefit UF/IFAS Extension and the citizens of Florida. Those who choose to participate in the program would attend a seven-week course wherein they would be provided with the different course materials such as books, energy conservation devices for the home, and other products that relate to sustainable living. The course is a combination of group discussions, weekly action exercises and resource materials for an interactive and informative program. Classes are held during Thursdays from 9am to 1pm where participants are taught about energy conservation, local foods, land use issues, water conservation, and community leadership.

A participant is required a total of 30 volunteer hours to complete the program and become a certified Sustainable Floridian. After completing the program, the participant would take on the role of educator and activist within his local community. The following are different activities that a participant may do to meet the required volunteer hours: participate in local outreach events, conduct tours and assessments, research new and emerging policies and technologies, write newspaper articles or blogs, support youth activities, and give educational programs to the public.

Interested in becoming a sustainable Floridian? Visit the Pinellas County Extension website to download and complete the application kit. The completed application can be mailed or dropped off at the PinellasCounty Extension Office located on Ulmerton Road. The application will be reviewed and follow-up interviews will be scheduled for potential program participants.
