  • Orlando, FL (1888PressRelease) March 21, 2012 - Lindsey Gergely and William Umansky, attorneys with The Umansky Law Firm (http://www.thelawman.net), were honored recently by the Florida Supreme Court for their 2011 pro bono work. The event was also observed by The Florida Bar's Young Lawyers Division and the Florida Pro Bono Coordinators Association.

The term Pro Bono is derived from the phrase "pro bono public" meaning "for the good of the public." The purpose of this award is to encourage more Florida young lawyers to freely contribute their time and expertise in providing legal services to people in their community who cannot otherwise afford those services. In some instances, this will include legal services to charitable organizations which serve the poor. The emphasis of this award is on legal service to the poor. The attorneys that were recognized for this accomplishment contributed 20 or more hours of pro bono work. These hours were committed to cases closed during 2011 as well as project work in 2011. Attorneys received a letter from the Chief Justice for 20 hours and were personally addressed by Chief Justice Charles T. Canady for 100 or more hours.

416 attorneys participated through legal aid in 2011.

The FPBCA is a voluntary association of coordinators of pro bono programs throughout Florida. Originally the officers were Chair, Chair-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, later modified as President and President-Elect. The membership elects officers at the annual meeting in June and the prior year's President-Elect succeeds to the Presidency. Original standing committees included Training, Technical Assistance, and Publication. Added later were Public Relations, General Practice Section Pro Bono Award, and the Kay B. Meyers Award. The Technical Assistance Committee no longer exists. The original Executive Committee was composed of the officers, the standing committee chairs and a representative from Florida Legal Services. The Executive Committee expanded to include the immediate past president. Source: http://www.floridalegal.org/ProBono/fpbca.htm

The Umansky Law Firm practices criminal defense, personal injury, and juvenile defense law in Florida and is located in Downtown Orlando. Pro bono work is among the many ways the law firm gets involved in the local community.

"Giving back to the community is a critical part of our profession. Pro Bono work provides a way for us to give back to the community we serve as there are many people out there who are in dire need and do not have the ability to pay for services," says William Umansky "I find Pro Bono work to be personally rewarding and we encourage all of the lawyers at our firm to get involved. Our right to practice law is a privilege and I find it a sincere honor to be able to give back to Orlando which has provided me such a great opportunity to practice my profession."

    About The Umansky Law Firm

At The Umansky Law Firm in Orlando, Florida, we have dedicated our law practice to representing people who are in a fight for their life - usually against a much larger adversary. In a criminal case, that adversary might be the state. In a personal injury case, more than likely it is the insurance company of the person who injured you. When you are in a fight in which your future is at stake, you need a law firm that takes the time to communicate with you. Our attorneys will be at your side through every step of your case: every consultation, court appearance, negotiation and trial if necessary. While our goal is to resolve your legal case without a trial, we are not afraid to try your case before a judge or a jury. We are former prosecutors who have tried hundreds of cases in Florida courtrooms. Our experience allows us to give you an honest evaluation of your case.
