Flint & Flint Dental surgeon visits Tanzania for "Bridge 2 aid"
Robert Dyas, our specialist oral surgeon has just taken part in "Bridge 2 aid" 2011 in Tanzania.
- (1888PressRelease) August 25, 2011 - Visiting rural hospitals throughout Mwansa, Robert Dyas, dentist at Flint and Fllint dentla practice in Sheffield, was part of a team of volunteer Oral Surgeons, Dentists and Dental Nurses who travelled to Tanzania to provide training for local doctors to do basic dental work.
The health care team best placed to deliver basic dental services to the large rural populations of the region (and indeed the majority of the African nation) are the rural Clinical Officers. They are responsible for the provision of all basic medical services in thousands of small dispensaries and health centres across Tanzania. If a vaccination is needed, a wound to be stitched, a baby to be delivered and pretty much anything else - the Clinical Officer is your nearest answer. 'Bridge to Aid' provide training for the officers to undertake basic dental treatment.
In Tanzania there is only 1 dentist per 300,000 of the population.
Whilst there Rob and his team saw a staggering 800 patients over a period of 6 days and most patients had travelled for hours or even days to be seen. As there is no dental treatment available, some patients had severe abscesses which in some cases had been present for over 15 years.
All treatment was provided outdoors without electricity, mains water or suction and surgery was carried out using basic instruments from the UK.
Working alongside the Tanzanian government, Bridge 2 Aid are addressing the urgent issues of the lack of treatment in rural areas. Most trained personnel are in cities, but with 90% of the population living in rural areas this is a major problem. Many patients get seriously ill or even die after attempting to extract teeth themselves.
