FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches to Host Gift of Life Marrow Donor Drive
Event to raise awareness of dire need to diversify the registry at spring training game's Hispanic Heritage Night.
- (1888PressRelease) March 09, 2018 - The FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches will host a recruitment drive to register potential bone marrow donors to benefit patients battling diseases like leukemia and lymphoma whom are in need of a transplant. The drive is being held on behalf of Gift of Life Marrow Registry in conjunction with the ballpark's Hispanic Heritage Night celebration on Friday, March 9, 2018.
Diversity in the worldwide marrow registry is urgently needed. 55% of Hispanic and Latino blood cancer patients never find a lifesaving donor, and not finding a donor means
they will not survive.
The drive will be at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, 5444 Haverhill Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 from 4-9:00 pm when the Houston Astros will take on the St. Louis Cardinals in a 6:05 pm start.
Hispanic children and adolescents have higher rates of leukemia than all other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. They also have lower leukemia survival rates than non-Hispanic white children.
Everyone is encouraged to participate. It’s fast, painless and all information is confidential. A simple swab from the inside of your cheek is all it takes to determine if you are a match. If you are between the ages of 18 and 45 and in general good health, you are eligible to be screened and join the worldwide registry for patients in need.
