  • Cleveland-Lorain-Elyria, OH (1888PressRelease) January 18, 2011 - Emergency Medicine Physicians applauds the success of our inaugural Emergency Medicine Efficiency Academy, held in late 2010 in Canton, Ohio. Drs. Steve Stephanides, John Janikas, and Kevin Corrigan served as core faculty for the landmark course, which aims to teach the skill of efficiency to Emergency Physicians.

The course focuses on methods to improve an Emergency Physician's clinical work flow and efficiency, helping them to learn to run their department - instead of letting their department run them. The goal of the Academy is to show physicians how to work smarter, not harder.

Some of the tools discussed in the Emergency Physician training course include focusing on disposition from the beginning of a patient encounter, and by creating and committing to a plan of action with each patient's workup. By establishing situational awareness of your waiting room, ancillary staff, lab and X-ray times, an emergency physician can more effectively manage departmental flow. The course also reviews strategies to carve out time during your shift to document and to perform procedures.

Here's what a couple of the attendees had to say:

"Although I have been out of residency for more than eight years, I learned a number of new ideas about how I can move patients more efficiently through the ED...and, perhaps more importantly, make my shifts less stressful and more enjoyable. Many thanks to John, Steve and Kevin for producing such an informative and interactive course!" - Lance F. Allgower, DO, FACEP

"I expected to come away from the Efficiency Academy with techniques that would help me quickly move more patients through the Emergency Department, but what I learned was so much more than that. Kevin, John and Steve helped me identify my personal roadblocks and goals, and completely changed my mindset about how I approach each shift. I returned to Iredell with a whole new skill set that has already helped me decrease LOS and increase my patients per hour, specifically by optimizing the first two hours on shift."

    - Cari Thompson, MD

Kudos to the instigating physicians and to Emergency Medicine Physicians for creation of yet another innovative Emergency Physician training platform.
