Alan Read, Donna Kisogloo and Johnny Cronje, who form the Counter Balance Trust, will ride their mono-wheel bikes from the Durban beachfront, and finishing at Mouille Point Lighthouse.
The ride, named The Freedom Revolution Unicycle Tour, will largely follow the route of the already established Freedom Challenge Trail, used by mountain bikers to contest the Freedom Challenge "Race Across South Africa" in July each year. The Freedom Challenge Trail is supported by the Wilderness Foundation and enables cyclists to cross deeply rural South Africa with a minimum impact on the environment.
The Counter Balance Team, all experienced off-road unicyclists, are hard in training to tackle the 46-day marathon, which will take them up to the Drakensberg escarpment, around the Maluti mountain range, through the Eastern Cape hinterland, across the Karoo and down to Paarl before finishing in Cape Town.
"This is going to be a crazy, wild adventure for us and a great opportunity to explore isolated parts of our beautiful country," says Donna Kisogloo. "And we are proud to be supporting the Bobs For Good Foundation, which is doing so much to uplift the lives of under-privileged schoolchildren."
The unicyclists will be supported on The Freedom Revolution Unicycle Tour by First Car Rental, who will be providing the branded First Car Rental Quantum for the entire adventure.
Says Melissa Storey, Executive Head: Strategy, Development & Marketing at First Car Rental, "This is wonderful initiative by a small group of very brave and dedicated people. First Car Rental is proud to be associated with this initiative and congratulates both the Counter Balance team and Bobs For Good Foundation for their indefatigable attitude towards those less fortunate. First Car Rental will be with you all the way."
