  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) December 15, 2015 - The highly expressive paintings of Jewish-American artist Judy Zimbert are as compelling as they are haunting, peopled by solitary figures captured in the ambiguous nature of existence and infused with all the emotions felt and experienced within that moment. Zimbert takes a careful approach to each piece, adding hundreds of thinly applied layers of paint until slowly the image begins to appear. The resulting paintings juxtapose a strong sense of figure and composition against the potency that color and texture can add to a canvas.

Inspired by the post-war angst of such painters as Lucien Freud and Frank Auerbach, and the German Expressionist art movement, Zimbert's paintings are full of symbolism and rich in meaning. With a background in TV and radio, she is able to absorb the emotional quality of the historical or current event to weave a visual narrative for her viewer, inviting that viewer to immerse himself or herself into the depth of emotional experience that spans across human history.

Judy Zimbert currently lives and works in Beverly Hills, California.

    About the Exhibition
The World Behind the Figure: The Manifestation of Milieu
So often, art exhibitions focus on the form of the individual, either abstractly or figuratively. In the exhibition The Manifestation of Milieu, sixteen artists look beyond the individual and at the world around. Exploring context, both environmental and temporal, these artists question the form in how it may interact with its surroundings. Whether in harmonious landscapes or tumultuous abstracts, in elemental colors or stark simplicity, these artists manipulate their media in order to investigate the importance of environment, the concept of contexts, the manifestation of milieu.
