Federal Comm. Commission Proposes Rules for Determining VoIP Outage Effects; Tele1Ten Supports Rule

- (1888PressRelease) September 26, 2011 - The Federal Communications Commission is proposing to make a rule which would extend the rules mentioned under Part 4 of the Communications Act related to telecom networks for voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology, and ISPs. According to Jeff Goldthorp, associate chief for cyber security, FCC, the primary goal of the rule is to make sure his agency is laced with the regulatory tools available to track problems with the VoIP telephone systems and also check on the outages on critical consumer services related to the 911 services.
Jeff adds that there are rules that require traditional telecom providers, cellular services providers and network service providers of various kinds, to provide outage reports after it exceeds a certain stipulated benchmark."
The additional rules which are being proposed might also quell concerns about the transition of VoIP technologies from older technologies like traditional telephones to wireless IP based phone systems. The existing rules do not allow tracking of outages and restricts the agency's ability to act on the problems.
Monitoring of emergency services like 9-1-1 is also important to deal with multiple problems. The FCC has made amendments to its rules that facilitate VoIP services to route calls from its customers to the 911 number.
